About the Department
The Department of Informatics and Applied Mathematics Center of Exact Sciences and Earth Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte - UFRN - was founded in 1985 and today operates in teaching , research and extension in the areas of computer science (or computing) and applied mathematics .
In teaching, the DIMAp supports undergraduate and postgraduate . Upon graduation, it is the main responsible for the course of Computer Science (BCC) and the new Software Engineering course (BES).
The department also has a strong collaboration with the Computer Engineering (EC), and offer several other basic disciplines for undergraduate courses at UFRN .
At the postgraduate level, the DIMAp houses the Graduate Program in Systems and Computing (PPGSC), with Masters and PhD courses .

History of the Department
The Department of Informatics and Applied Mathematics ( DIMAp ) was established by Resolution No. 100 of the University Council ( CONSUNI ) of November 7, 1985 , by the dismemberment of the Department of Pure and Applied Mathematics . The creation process was initiated through a project developed by a committee chaired by Professor Maria Estela de Carvalho Araújo .
The group that composed the teaching staff at the beginning , the founders , was formed by the following professors : Adrião Bernardino of Siena , Alax Jorge Morales, Antonio Eduardo Bouillon , Carlos Augusto Cavalcanti de Lima , Darius Joseph Aloise , Maria Estela de Carvalho Araújo , Gilvan swarthy , Ioris Ramalho Cortez , Soriano John of the Cross , John Wildes Birth , Joaquim Elias de Freitas , Lourival Coelho da Silva Filho , Luiz Carlos Amorim , Luiz Gonzaga Damasceno , Márcio da Silva Muniz , Maria Sonia Nogueira , Nilda Maria Teixeira de Cerqueira and Orlando de Castro Moreira .
Of these only five ( Darius Joseph Aloise , John Soriano Cruz , Lourival Coelho da Silva Filho , Luiz Carlos Amorim and Orlando de Castro Moreira ) remain active .
The first official DIMAp was de Araujo Freire .
Leadership of Prof: Ioris Ramalho Cortez
The first chief was Prof. DIMAp . Ioris Ramalho Cortez . The main activity of the department at its inception was the teaching of subjects Programming and Numerical Calculation for various engineering courses and the courses of the then Centre for Mathematical Sciences ( Mathematics , Physics , Chemistry , Statistics and Geology ) .
Also maintained the Specialization Course in Systems Engineering that had been created yet in the Department of Pure and Applied Mathematics . At that time programming was done on a large computer ( mainframe ) and still used punch cards for reading data .
The room where he currently works in the laboratory of microcomputers CCET was occupied by various drills card and then also has long been the Secretary of DIMAp .
Following the DIMAp began offering extension courses for the community in the area of programming . It was the beginning of the use of microcomputers shy , if we can call it the machines of that era . Initially used the TK82 which had the amazing memory 2KB ! It was a major breakthrough came when a card expanded memory to 16KB . The monitor was a TV and the programs were recorded on audio cassette . The BASIC language was used more . The evolution was happening : TK85 , TK90 Corisco ( 8-bit micro ) . That time had been created the Central Laboratory of Micros ( LCM ) in the same place where it currently works .
Also in the mandate of prof . Ioris Course was created for Computer Science , by Resolution No. 062 of CONSUNI of July 17, 1986 .
Leadership of Prof: Márcio Muniz
The first elected DIMAp was Professor Professor . Márcio Muniz , having held the office for two consecutive terms , not having completed his second term because he retired. The deputy head teacher was Estela .
With the Course of Computer Science newly created increased the need for more qualified teachers and faculty . The difficulties were enormous . Acquisitions of teachers , by hiring or transfer of other departments , were insufficient . For some teachers could qualify others had to take high load of classes and disciplines for which had not been adequately prepared .
During the leadership of Prof. . Márcio were transferred to DIMAp teachers José Francisco Gomes da Silva Fernandes and Pedro Maia . Were also hired teachers Adilson Barboza Lopes and William Jackson Marques de Carvalho .
The first class of the course of Computer Science , self titled " The Guinea Pigs " , completed in 1990 . The course coordinator at the time was Professor . Pedro Fernandes Maia .
In the second term of Prof. . Márcio Commission was created , designated by the directors of CCE and CT , in order to explore new alternatives for computing education . The committee was composed of the Chief DIMAp , Prof. . Marty the Course Coordinator of Computer Science , Professor . Pedro Fernandes Maia and two professors in the Department of Electrical Engineering in the area of Computer Engineering Master of Electrical Engineering . With the support of Prof. . Márcio , teachers of Electrical Engineering proposed the creation of a Course of Computer Engineering , linked to the Technology Center and The Course of Computer Science . The proposal also provided for the creation of a department of computing at the Technology Center will absorb the most qualified teachers DIMAp . What was left of the DIMAp act only in teaching basic subjects . This proposal was a threat to the existence of the Course of Computer Science and DIMAp own . Faced with this situation Prof . Pedro Maia , with the support of the majority of DIMAp , withdrew from the commission. Then began a movement for manutensão Course of Computer Science and revitalization of DIMAp by hiring teachers and contribution promised when creating the Course of Computer Science .
Leadership of Prof. . Pedro Fernandes Maia
In May 1991 assumed the Chief Prof . Pedro Fernandes Maia . Having as Deputy Chief Prof . Antonio Eduardo Bouillon , Prof. . Pedro Maia served three consecutive terms until June 1997 .
This period was very decisive leadership to DIMAp . There were many challenges to overcome . The number and qualifications of teachers still far below the desirable. The physical infrastructure was poor and the department had no visibility even at the regional level . The research was in its infancy . The department did not have doctors in their teaching staff .
Aiming to improve the difficulties intensified the fight for places teachers at the Rectory and at the same time an effort to fill these vacancies with more qualified people . The strategy used was wider dissemination of the department , through the Internet began to spread in academia and the active participation of the head of department and the coordinator of the Computer Science of the Brazilian Computer Society Congress . Gradually the DIMAp became known nationally , then a department pre -emergent and allowed the capture of qualified or in the process of qualifying to provide competition in the department .
Another factor that contributed to make known and to attract people DIMAp was holding events . In 1994 I was made EIMA - Meeting of Applied Mathematics and Informatics , coordinated by Prof. . Darius . The EIMA 95 , coordinated by Prof. . Pedro Maia , has established itself as a mid-sized event and featured a varied program and brought teachers from various institutions.
During this period of chegia were hired for the permanent staff , and visitors to , or integrated DIMAp through scholarship programs Newly Doctor or Regional Scientific Development the following teachers : Guido Lemos de Souza Filho , Gledson Elias da Silveira , Benedito Melo Acioly , Anamaria Martins Moreira , Benjamin Bedregal René Callejas , David Paul Deharbe Boris , Elizabeth Gouveia Ferreira , Ivan Saraiva Silva , Galileo Batista de Souza , Jair Cavalcanti Leite , Jorge Henrique Cabral Fernandes Bastos Gottgtroy Marcia de Paiva , Marco César Goldbarg , Thais Vasconcelos Batista , Virginia Oak Carneiro de Paula , Anne Magaly Paula Canuto and Bruno Motta Carvalho .
Some of these teachers had titration Doctor , but most were in the process of qualifying when they were hired . This created a conflict between the need for more teachers and the importance of qualifications .
There was a rule UFRN which provided that the contract teacher could only get away for qualification after two years in office which made it difficult to continue the program for whom it was contracted while studying postgraduate . Taking the case of Pr . Guido as a model that could DIMAp CONSEPE change the rules . So who was hired and was doing graduate could continue after hiring without having to stop it . This change facilitated the hiring of people who were enrolled in doctoral and helped a lot in increasing the qualifications of the teaching staff of the DIMAp .
The first DIMAp teacher with a doctorate was Prof. . Darius which concluded in 1992 . The second was the Professor . Goldbarg hired in 1994 .
With only two doctors , but with several contractors in the process of completion of the doctorate, the DIMAp created the Master in Computer Systems in 1995 . The recognition by CAPES only occurred in 1998 . The creation of the master was very important to strengthen the research activities that were growing in DIMAp .
It was at this stage that the DIMAp intensified partnerships with other institutions in the country and even abroad . Through PROTEM - CC ( Thematic Project Multi - institutional computer science ) from the CNPq DIMAp participated in joint projects such as Hypermedia ( in partnership with PUC - RJ and several universities in Brazil and Chile ) , plus compete ( and win ) in two notices of laboratories .
The DIMAp was also awarded grants Newly Doctor and Scientific Development Regional Regional . When Kit was released Newly Doctor CNPq , the 50 bags in hand for the country DIMAp won 4 .
During this period the head of the Computer Science Course was rated by the Revista INFO in 25th place among the top 100 courses in Computing in Brazil , ranking third among the courses in the northeast.
Even in this period of leadership continued discussion around the issue of the creation of the Course of Computer Engineering that ended up being created in the form of course Intercentros ( CCET and CT ) as defined by DIMAp .
The struggle for the acquisition of equipment and improvement of the physical infrastructure of DIMAp , with emphasis on the construction of its own building , was a constant in this period of headship . However , the results were not always satisfactory . The amount and configuration of the equipment never reached a desirable level and the building only came to be built during the next chief .
Leadership of Prof. Antonio Eduardo Bouillon
Prof. . Bouillon was elected for two terms to the Head of DIMAp , as vice chief Prof . Guido Lemos de Souza Filho . The first term began in July 1997 . During the second term , which began in July 1999 , was the resignation of Prof. . Guido , having been elected Professor . Ioris to complete the mandate of deputy chief .
During the leadership of Prof. . Bouillon the DIMAp conitnuou its policy of investing in training and improving the infrastructure. Milestone was the inauguration of the building 's own DIMAp occurred in May 1999 .
An important feature of the leadership of Prof. . Bouillon was its ability to reconcile before some conflict situations . Thanks to this spirit , able to maintain a productive work environment in the department .
The Professor . Marcia Jacyntha was hired in that period .
Before comlpetar half of the second term Prof . Bouillon had to leave for health reasons . From April 2000, had successive returns due to the worsening of the illness that led to his death . It was a great loss to the DIMAp and UFRN .
The mandate of Professor . Bouillon was concluded by Prof. . Ioris who was in charge until July 2001 . During this period occurred the anniversary of 15 years of DIMAp .
Second Leadership of Prof . Ioris
After completing the mandate of Professor . Bouillon , Prof. . Ioris was again elected to head DIMAp , and as the deputy chief Prof.Carlos Augusto Cavalcanti de Lima . A month before the end of the mandate Prof . Ioris retired , having completed the mandate by the deputy head Prof . Charlie .
Were hired during this period teachers Regivan Hugo Nunes Santiago , Anne Magaly Paula Canuto and Maurice André Cunha Campos .
Leadership of Professor . Anamaria Martins Moreira
The Professor . Anamaria took charge for two years from July 2003 as vice chief Prof . Maurice André .
Were hired during this period teachers Marsilius C. P. Souto , Bruno de Carvalho Motta , Umberto Souza da Costa and Martin A. Musicante .
During this period the project was prepared opening Doctoral degree under the postgraduate program in existing DIMAp . This project should be referred to the CAPES after getting PPGSC concept greater than or equal to 4 in the evaluation promoted by the institution .
The expansion of the building DIMAp were also initiated during the leadership of Professor . Anamaria . This expansion is an ancient DIMAp counterclaims .

Term commenced in September 2005 and as deputy chief Prof . Lourival da Silva Filho .
